Jim Patterson was born into an upper-middle-class family in Inglewood, California in 1941. His father was a self-made man and set an example to Jim of the virtues of hard work and determination. From his progressive mother he inherited a sense of justice and fairness. These influences combined to inspire Jim to pursue a career in law. His family was too poor to afford to send him to college, so Jim worked his way through school, paying for both his undergrad and graduate degrees out of his own pocket.
It was while attending UCLA Law School in 1966 that he met Mei Patterson one evening while at a mutual friend’s party. It was love at first sight for both, and they spent the rest of the evening out on the roof of the house, taking in the view of West L.A. and talking. They were married six months later. In 1970, his first child, a daughter named Amy, was born. Seven years later, a second child, a son named Ken, was born.
Jim currently holds a high-level appointment as Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County. He has helped successfully prosecute several high-profile cases (most recently the “Night Stalker” murders), and there are many in the corridors of power whispering his name as a possible candidate for D.A. during the next election cycle.
