Mei Kobayashi was born at the Heart Mountain internment camp in 1943. Her parents re-settled in Los Angeles after the war, in the neighborhood of Little Tokyo. The trauma of the camps, dimly recalled in Mei’s own memory but vividly remembered in the family’s collective conscious, along with the traditional pressures that came with growing up Asian in America, did much to dull Mei’s ambitions. In particular, she maintained a difficult relationship with her mother, Himawari, who (Mei believed) never fully loved or approved of her daughter.
Mei attended UCLA on an art scholarship (she was well-known in the Japanese-American community as an expert sumi-e painter), where she met and fell in love with Jim Patterson, an ambitious law student. There may have been an element of rebellion in her marrying a gaikokujin…or perhaps it was just the inevitable result of growing up as a child of immigrants who identifies more with the culture she was raised in than with that of the Old Country.
Mei enjoys the fruits of a prosperous life that has come with marriage to a successful lawyer, and largely draws her sense of self-worth from the accomplishments of her husband and children.
